Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - Live at Koko, London - Wednesday 14 April 2010
Exclusive UK Concert to launch the new album “I Learned the Hard Way” ( Daptone Records )
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have come a long way since their humble beginnings nearly a decade ago. Steeped within the gilded and gritty sounds of gospel, soul and funk, this nine-piece Brooklyn collective has continued to electrify fans, disc jockeys, critics, record collectors, and bloggers the world-over with their authentic, heart-felt sound. The authenticity clearly demonstrated on the bands three critically- acclaimed albums Dap Dippin (2002), Naturally (2005) and 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007) captured and released by the independent Daptone Records. Their albums recall an analog era led by iconic studios like those at Motown and Stax Records, and have thrust the fifty-three-year-old Augusta, GA native and crew into the multimedia limelight.
As distinguished as their recordings may be, however, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have truly become renowned thanks to their incredible live show, not to mention their relentless touring. And though its certainly no easy task to keep such a vast ensemble on the road, the band continues to pack hundreds of clubs worldwide, from legendary venues like New Yorks Apollo Theater, Beacon Theater and Central Parks SummerStage to their show-stopping sets at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and WOMAD.
To Billie Holiday with Love - A Celebration of Lady Day
16 April 2010 / 19:30
In 2010, one of today’s greatest jazz voices pays tribute to her greatest inspiration, the immortal Billie Holiday. Dee Dee’ Bridgewater’s daughter China Moses opens with a set dedicated to Dinah Washington.
Grammy- and Tony Award-winning artist, a producer and a UN Ambassador, Dee Dee Bridgewater is probably the most electrifying stage presence in vocal jazz today. Returning to one of her prime inspirations, the great Billie Holiday, Dee Dee Bridgewater brings her Lady Day show to the Barbican for the first time. Created in the 1980s, the show won her an Olivier award nomination during its London residency.
‘Dee Dee Bridgewater has the jazz world standing on its ears. With the passing of many grand dames of jazz such as Ella and Sarah, Dee Dee Bridgewater is becoming a legend in her own time.’ JazzReview.com

LARRY GRAHAM & GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION
KOKO, 1a, Camden High Street, London, NW1.
Sunday 25 April 2010. Doors open at 7pm.
Exclusive UK show from the Inventor of the “Slap” Bass technique and ex-member of SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, PRINCE & BETTY DAVIS Bands.
Larry Graham will be performing with Graham Central Station for this first London show in over a decade.
Larry Graham, Jr. (born August 14, 1946 in Beaumont, Texas) is an American baritone singer, musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as both the bass guitar player in the popular and influential psychedelic soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone, and as the founder and frontman of Graham Central Station. He is credited with the invention of the slapping technique, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass guitar.
Although bassplayers for decades, indeed into antiquity, had been “slapping” their basses with their thumbs using a rotation of the wrist, Larry Graham pioneered the art of slap-pop playing on the electric bass guitar. The slap-pop style, archetypical of modern funk, couples a percussive thumb-slapping technique of the lower strings with an aggressive finger-snap of the higher strings, often in rhythmic alternation. So-called “Machine-gun bass” (as exemplified by Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins, Louis Johnson, Mark King, Flea, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, John Norwood Fisher, P-Nut, Danny McCormack, Dirk Lance) relies on the slap-pop technique, incorporating a large ratio of mute/ghost tones to normal tones.
Graham played bass in the highly successful and influential funk band Sly & the Family Stone from 1967 to 1972. Upon the band’s disintegration due to lead singer Sly Stone’s drug addiction, Graham formed his own band, Graham Central Station. The name is a pun of “Grand Central Station”, a famous train station located in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Graham Central Station had several hits in the 1970s, including “Hair.”
In the mid 1970s, Larry Graham was also a key member in the career of Betty Davis, wife of jazz legend Miles Davis. With a band that also included members of the Tower of Power horns and the Pointer Sisters, Betty Davis recorded three albums to critical acclaim but limited commercial success.
In the early 1980s, Graham recorded five solo albums and had several solo hits. His biggest hit was “One in a Million, You”, which reached number 9 on the Billboard chart in 1980.
He recorded another album in the late 1990s, with a new band using the Graham Central Station name. Two of the new members were former Family Stone bandmates Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini. He also toured with Prince and his band as his bassist in 2000.
This is the groups first live show in London since 1996..!

From his first (1969) LP as leader, Extrapolation, to In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew and Jack Johnson with Miles Davis, to the foundation of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti to the present, Yorkshire-born McLaughlin is one of the great figures in jazz guitar history.
A technical master of his instrument as well as a searching innovator, he has established a reputation as a “first-call” session player resulting in recordings as a sideman with Miroslav Vitous, Larry Caryell, Waynen Shorter, Carla Bley and even the Rolling Stones. For his Barbican concert he returns to a powerhouse electric jazz setting with the UK debut of his new small group, featuring Gary Husband on keyboards and drummer Mark Mondesir.

One of the world’s great songwriters, and a thrilling live performer, Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso’s music radiates warmth.
His seductive, melodic voice and bossa-nova style guitar push Brazilian traditions into exciting new realms. On this visit, he’ll be playing material from his wonderful album on Wrasse, Zii e Zie, described by Songlines as ‘a kind of Radiohead-tinged samba - glorious, satisfying stuff, consolidating Veloso’s return to his grandiose best.’
