In Bed With Flora
(London, August 22nd 2009)
Flora Purim talks to Seymour Nurse at The Bottom End about her prodigious music career and inspirational life story, in a very special and intimate interview.
4hero present a compilation of original previously unreleased cover versions of their music, reinterpreted by a selection of hand picked artists. When presented with the idea of doing another remix album they felt a need to do something new and fresh, rather than calling up the usual remix suspects and getting dance floor club mixes 4hero have put together an album that would happily sit on the shelf of a 4hero fan. For this project they’ve sought out a range of forward thinking outfits, orchestra’s & producers including some new discoveries to cover their music. 4hero played their part in the music supervision including some recording, mixing and co producing tracks on the album making the project that much more special to the 4hero fan base. The result is cinematic and dynamic in structure and styles. 4hero are well known for pioneering new electronic music genres including Jungle/D&B, Broken Beat and Nu Jazz. The “Extensions” recordings are the best way to define Nu Jazz.

In fact we might as well recommend “The Jazz Issue” (issue No. 34) also. The enthusiastic folk as WP continue their quest to print everything you need know about black music. The front & back covers of issue 36 features great images of a bearded, 70s flared-jean Gilberto Gil walking down a New York street and the back is percussion meister Airto Moreira with tools of his trade firmly in each hand.
Inside, you’ll read about Airto, Arthur Verocai, Tim Maia, nu-skool Brazilian beauty, Céu, Azymuth frontman José Roberto Bertrami and be able to gloss over the pics of all the rare Brazilian records we can’t get our hands on!
We recommend you purchase both issues from Juno as they seem to be the cheapest at the moment (£6.99 - issue 36 / £7.99 - issue 34)

It has taken a little effort over the few years to convince me of Sa Ra’s talent in the studio, but slowly and surely, they have been coming correct and musically maturing very nicely thank you. I liked the work they did on Erykah’s last album, so that ticked an important box for me.
This album (double vinyl or 2 x CD with a few older obscure Sa Ra previously vinyl only released tracks on) represents the proper coming of age of this creative threesome. Their music no longer tries to shroud itself in self-importance (as I felt it did at the very beginning), but instead shows where funk-tinged electronic soul music can go. They have the right balance of guest vocalists (including Ms. Badu on just 1 track) and cosmic instrumentals to make for a very exciting and listenable album. Also, so I don’t disappoint the Jazz heads, you need to hear ‘Spacefruit’ cut (feat. Debi Nova) and ‘Cosmic Ball’ (feat. The Gary Bartz Quartet) opening and closing the main album respectively. If you like modern music with a little bit of a creative edge, then do buy this album. You won’t be disappointed!

“Graffiti art is free art, offering free culture for people. Art and music you can teach but you don’t have to go to university. Working on this project directly with the kids and using new art to help people, it’s an honour and a power. Power brings enlightenment.”
Speto aka Paulo Cesar Silva is one of São Paulo’s premiere older-school graffiti artists whose work has evolved from self-taught, Brazilian cultural heritage-inspired graffiti to Brazilian wood carvings, illustration, folk art and character animation. Speto represents the brilliant aesthetic of São Paulo street art – tradition vs. contemporary, one that was recently commissioned as the identity of Brahma and featured in the stunning Ilustradores group show at Choque Cultural (São Paulo) alongside Mariza Days Coast, Alan Voss and Stephan Doitschinoff (Calma).

This book is great for those of you that read album covers and generally crave the knowledge of a musical genre that is rightfully re-establishing its place in the hearts and minds of dancers and music lovers around the world.
This book transports you back to the days of disco’s growth and underground popularity in arguably the birthplace and nurturing home of the genre. Author Aletti used to cover the underground New York disco scene in most of the popular music mags of the day (including Rolling Stone magazine). A lot of those original articles and interviews are featured again as well as the original club and DJ charts and reviews of singles and albums as they were reviewed back in the day.
Definitely a book for the disco geeks among us, but a fascinating and insightful read all the same.
