Gene Rice ‘G3 – You Know What Love Feels Like…’ (Mystique Music) 4/5

by ukvibe

gene-riceThe deep velvet voice of Gene Rice hasn’t been heard in a long time. He last fired me up in 1991, when his “Just For You” set landed and the dancer “You’re a Victim” tore up dance floors everywhere. Vocally, little has changed, other than he appears to have a deeper tone. The voice is strong and dominant on every track and the album musically has many classy layers, although the actual CD disappeared almost on release, so I’m relying on the download and don’t have information on who plays what!
After a short intro (a complete waste of time) we drop into “Lay With It”, a very modern head nodder which is a real grower. The simply stunning chugger, “Keep Your Love Right Here”, should see him garner the radio play – just so perfect for today’s radio jocks. “I Wanna Be Your Man” is another highlight, balladry of the highest quality. “Ready To Love You” is a modern day RnB piece with an infectious groove, ripe for remixes from the RnB boys out there… Now back to the grown-ups with “Dedication”, a head nodder with melody. “Come On In” leans a bit too heavily towards Will Downing, but just manages to stay on the soul side. “Miracle” is another slow burner with some lovely touches, and the up-tempo dancer “Mr Telephone Man” gets into a groove and ain;t that bad at all, Another grower is the stepper “Truly I do”, which is very classy, and the album closes with a ballad featuring Alfi Silas called “When Skies Were Blue”, a meandering piece.
Vocally Gene Rice is ‘on point’ throughout this album and it’s a real joy to have him back.
