MIX NO. 34: Broken Biskitz

Broken Beat is one of the most recent musical genres to come from the UK, known as vibrant, afro-futuristic dance music for the 21st-century b-boys. It started with the Bugz in the Attic collective, Afronaught, IG Culture, Daz-I-Kue, Phil Asher, DEGO (4 Hero), to name a few of the DJs/Producers. The first London night was Co-Op, which started at Velvet Rooms and then, later on, moved to Plastic People, showcasing all the music being made. It was also strongly represented outside London by Liquid Fusion in Birmingham, as well as other prominent clubs around the globe.
Broken Beat is drawn from the most eclectic influences as diverse as jazz fusion, hip-hop, techno, drum and bass, soul, funk, acid jazz and house music. It also has been largely influenced by artists such as Lonnie Liston Smith, George Duke, Herbie Hancock and Roy Ayers. As soon as the broken beat genre began it was driven forward with its electrifying records which featured syncopated rhythms and rolling basslines with raw, choppy rhythmic felt drums.

Bruce Q has championed this sound in Birmingham since its inception and having been on board the ukvibe waggon from as early as 1994 we very much welcome his contributions to the scene and our magazine.
